Choir

Ministry Team Leader - Jim McKay

The psalmist in what has been numbered the one hundred and forty-seventh psalm admonishes his readers to "Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely." We speculate this, the first verse of the psalm, was sung by temple singers as an entreaty to the worshippers to join in and lend their voices to the hymn of praise, the words of which were written on their hearts through the verbal traditions of the day. And so goes the tradition of the choir today.

The choir is a great place for those who enjoy singing in harmony with others to the glory of God to do so. There are no specific vocal requirements nor any tryout required. Music is selected with the un-musician; in mind. (Here's a secret: Most of us don't read music.) Typically, if you can sing along with the radio in the car, and other drivers don't wince, you will do nicely in the loft. While we always strive to provide the perfect sacrifice of music, our strivings usually take us to a place where we offer our sacrifice with humble hearts and a comfort level that it is acceptable to both the congregation and the Lord. (We find the Lord very gracious in that He has never struck the choir dead for offering strange musical fire on the altar.)

We meet on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for about ninety minutes. We may rehearse a little more around the holidays. We sing every Lord's Day with the exception of the first one of the month. If you are inclined to sing, but not in front of a crowd, come for rehearsal and worship/rehearse with us. Even though we work hard at rehearsal, we laugh a lot and find ourselves worshipping through the rehearsed music.

The music of today, not unlike the Psalms, uses the passion found in chords, rhythm, and lyrics to express the most poignant of emotions to our God. How else to frame His majesty, grace, and wonder? How better to express the sense of a contrite spirit? What more jubilant setting in which to reveal the joy of our salvation through His grace? If you have ever wanted to say those kinds of things to God with all the emotion you can muster, then choir would be the place for you. We look forward to seeing you.

Loving from the loft.... ...the choir.
